The gut is a busy place and keeping it in good shape is absolutely crucial for our overall health.
- Prebiotics and probiotics are equally important in keeping your gut happy and healthy.
- Prebiotics are mostly soluble fibres and resistant starches that act as fuel for good bacteria in the large intestine or colon.
- Some foods that are naturally high in prebiotics include green bananas, cashew nuts and raw oats.
- Probiotics are good bacteria that are naturally found in our gut and certain foods.
- Kefir is a fermented drink that is rich in probiotics. It is usually made with milk but can also be made with coconut water and coconut milk.
- The easiest way to obtain kefir grains is from a family member or friend who might already have them growing at home.
- Measure your kefir grains and add the same volume of milk into a glass container. Cover the container with a lid and leave it on the kitchen bench in a cool place for 24 hours.
- The microorganisms in the kefir grains multiply and ferment the lactose that is naturally occurring in the milk, turning it into kefir.
- Sieve the liquid, remove the grains and repeat the same process on a daily basis.
- Kefir tastes quite sour, like natural yoghurt, and is delicious in smoothies, overnight oats and pancakes or just on its own.
