Wine Appreciation: Nero D’Avola

Story: Wine Appreciation: Nero D’Avola
Episode: 8
Presenter: Scott Bridger
Air Date: 27th November 2022

Scott gets treated to a delicious Italian feast and sips on a wonderful wine made with the Nero D’Avola grape variety.

  • This Sicilian antipasto platter features as part of La Fattoria’s Nonna’s family table. It’s one of Eric’s nonna’s legacies that everyone gets to enjoy when they book in for Eric and Lucy’s long lunch experience here on their family property in beautiful Pickering Brook.
  • There are Nocellara olives, house marinated sweet peppers, pepato pecorino, coppa and dried pork and fennel sausage typical of that made by the family throughout the years and of course Nonna’s famous cauliflower and anchovy fritters.
  • Today we are looking at Nero d’Avola, a Sicilian variety grown here at La Fattoria Perth Hills.  Nero D’Avola translates as ‘black from Avola’ a small city in the south of Sicily.
  • This grape has been selected because it loves a hot and relatively dry climate which makes it perfectly suited to the warm conditions of the Perth Hills.
  • The wines are often compared to new world shirazzes and this one at La Fattoria certainly fits that bill. This wine is sublime. It has notes of chocolate and coffee and with soft tannins and a rounded mouth feel.
  • The best way to enjoy this wine is with great friends over a Nonna’s family long lunch experience at La Fattoria Perth Hills.
