- Trevor’s tips for growing healthy herbs:
- Select plants that are lush, with no dead leaves, and a strong, full foliage. Healthy, white roots are a sign of good quality.
- Use starter plants, which are often hardier and more reliable than growing from seeds.
- Use a potting mix with the Australian premium standard red tick. It should be rich, organic, and well-aerated to support rapid growth.
- Wear gloves, or thoroughly wash your hands after handling soil to avoid exposure to contaminants.
- When potting, aim for a 30cm circumference around the plant or use a larger pot like a 40cm bowl for up to 4 plants. Ensure the plants sit approximately 5cm below the rim. Fill any gaps with extra potting mix, press down gently, and water to remove air pockets.
- Grow at least two planters. Rotate them in and out of the kitchen to allow one to rest while you harvest fresh herbs from the other.
